Gerber Good Start Gentle Powder

We tried several formulas. At first we went with Similac Sensitive, which worked well for our baby's gassy tummy. With all the coupons for Similace we found it cheaper but after talking with my pediatrician we finally decided to look at the ingredients on the back of the container. Both Similac and Enfamil list corn syrup as their number one ingredient. Only Gerber Goodstart has real ingredients and it is the only formula I will trust for my little one.

My husband and I have a philosophy with my older son that if we won't eat it, then we won't force him too. With the new baby we took a similar approach. My daughter was exclusively breastfed for her first 6 months, but then I was unable to supply enough for her growing needs so we needed to supplement. We tried all the name brands beginning with the organics because that is what we prefer...Earth's Best, Similac, then Enfamil...they all smelled terrible and tasted worse! The baby wouldn't drink any of them, not that I blame her because I certainly wouldn't. Finally I tried Gerber Good Start and the smell was significantly more tolerable and amazingly enough she will drink it! I would recommend this formula to anybody having difficulty getting their breastfed baby to take anything else.

Like a lot of other people who reviewed this product, I was having trouble with an extremely gassy and unhappy baby. I had tried every other formula, Similac Advanced, Sensitive, Enfaily Newborn, Gentlease and then someone mentioned Gerber Good Start. Originally I tried Soothe but that made my baby slightly constipated. Moved onto Gentle and voila! Happy baby.

There are a few things against it.

1. It does not mix well. We put a little boiling water in, mix with a spoon then finish off with cold water and then we have to shake the bottle a lot to clear out all the lumps.

2. It clogs the bottle nipple (see above)

3. It does not smell like vanilla. Those people who say that it smells like vanilla have never smelt vanilla before. It smells like powdered milk.

This leads me to the things that are good about it.

1. It has milk protein as it's largest ingredient while corn syrup is number three. This is the only formula I know that has this, and that may be why it is gentle on the babies tummy.
