Thinkbaby BPA Free Kid's Cup, 6 Months

thinkbaby BPA Free Kid's Cup, OrangeI wanted to love this cup, having been looking for a cute alternative to utilitarian metal vessels, but it's not exactly what I thought it might be. After re-reading the product description, I realised it did say that the cup has a polypropylene insulation, but I think I was thrown by the statement that it was an alternative to "continually buy[ing] cheap plastic products", so I expected something like a powder coated stainless steel, maybe with some kind of enclosed, interior insulation pocket. Imagine my surprise when I open the box having essentially a plastic cup with a metal inner cup. They meant -externallyinsulated. Well, I was disappointed, to say the least.

Additionally, the plastic then, contrasted with the crisp, shiny metal inside, actually looks kind of cheap. There's a lot of visible mold seaming, and while I don't think it would break the skin, it can make an uncomfortable scratch if the cup was ever roughly removed from the baby's grip for any reason. And though, I suppose, it could be quickly and easily buffed down with a light pass of a fine grit sand paper, I can't imagine many people wanting to spend so much for a cup they then have to do finishing treatment on at home. The way the handle joins with the body leaves a long seam that, in person, reminds me of seeing the folded edge of paper liners inside those cheap, insulated coffee tumblers. I thought the whole point was to not have a bunch of cheap looking, plastic stuff littering your house. Unfortunately, this is probably the cheapest looking expensive cup I've ever purchased. I'm also a little unsure of a small manufacturing hole in the bottom of the cup. Is this necessary somehow or is it going to possibly allow liquid to be trapped between the layers to turn into something foul? The last concern is that the handle doesn't fully join to the body on the bottom. I'm able to gently pry the cup handle away from the body which opens up a gap that's small enough and sharp enough to possibly pinch. I'm not sure that, in normal use, the baby or toddler might manage to pull the handle and get themselves pinched, but I can't think of a good reason this should have been left that way. Are we just betting on hoping the kid doesn't figure it out?

Well, on the pro side, the cup is light and easy for my baby to hold. It's super bright, almost neon. I was fond of the "think" message on the front (though every time I see it, it reminds me how I didn't "think" that polypropylene insulation was referring to an exterior, rather than enclosed interior, insulation and I ended up paying 20$ for a plastic cup.) The benefit of the plastic, at least, is that if baby were to drop it, I feel it would be less likely to dent than my very abused looking Klean Kanteen bottle, which is all metal. And sensitive-skinned children will appreciate protection from warms or colds on their hands, thanks to the plastic layer around the cup.

I rated a 3 for "It's OK" because I feel the cup is a combination of pros and cons. But because my baby isn't big on throwing or dropping things, I think I'm going to return my cup and stick with the ceramics I already have. For me, the pros did not outweigh the cons and the disappointment with the reality of the construction materials, but perhaps this will be a good choice for you.

This product looked pretty good and I ordered it for my 14 month old grandson who is all about drinking from a cup these days.

He previously had been using the Think Baby sippy "cup" with the straw and aside from the fact it tends to leak no matter how well you tighten the top, it worked pretty well. So we decided to try the Think Baby cup. I somehow thought it would have an insert in the top with a small opening so that when my grandson tipped it up to drink it would not dump most of the liquid all over his neck and shirt. (What ever happened to those types of cups anyway? I've looked every where and have been unable to find them.) For this cup, my grandson was easily able to remove the inner stainless steel cup from the outer orange plastic cup and likes to do this every time, so the plastic exterior was pretty much not even used after one or two tries. The truth is my daughter-in-law and I do not much care for this cup and I am sorry I wasted the money on it. It is quite simply...just a cup with nothing special going for it aside from the bright, eye catching orange color and logo. I would NOT recommend it for anyone's toddler who is just starting with a cup, but perhaps it would be fine for an older child of 2 or 3. (The 6 month label on the product is ridiculous.) What we have discovered that works extremely well is a small travel cup with a small re-closable opening in the top. It is easy to use, has a handle, and a small toddler sized amount can be consumed without the messy flooding of face, neck, clothing, etc. In other words it seems to offer a toddler with much more control. We have one in stainless steel; it goes right into the dishwasher and can take all the dropping and normal abuse that goes along with the "baby" stage.

My son (now 4) has been using his cup for 2 years, and now that my second son turned 2, he wants his own cup too. Overall we love this cup, and I don't see any major problem with it. I don't think it looks cheap and for a cup that stands 2 years of use, the price is quite fair. Yes, liquid will get trapped between the plastic cover and the metal cup, but only if you allow it to happen. After each use, you will have to remove the metal from the plastic cover and wash them apart. The metal, in our house, goes to the dish-washer, and for the plastic part, we hand-wash it. No big deal. The handler is indeed detached from the bottom, but it is still in very good shape after 2 years of very HEAVY use. The only major thing that happened to this cup was the fading of the white letter, which is totally irrelevant. Overall, this is a good cup: it is easy to use, it won't expose our child to plastic chemicals, easy to wash, and the kids love it.

I love this stainless steel mug. My toddlers love to drink hot tea and what could be better than a BPA free non breakable mug. Yes, the writing has come off but the cup is still solid after almost 2 years of use.

Badger Chamomile and Calendula Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen 2.9 oz

Badger Chamomile and Calendula Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen 2.9 ozIf you aren't accustomed to using natural sunscreens then your immediate reaction would be to not like this sunscreen. Using natural ingredients and making a sunscreen safe tends to mean that it will be greasier than you are used to. However, this is one of the safest sunscreens on the market. Competing with a little greasiness vs endocrine disrupting chemicals is a no brainer for me. I use this on my kids for days spent in the pool since it is more water resistant than many natural sunscreens thanks to the "greasiness".

Despite other negative reviews, I purchased this item because it is certified all natural and rated very well on other sites as one of the best all natural sun protection for babies. I was a little skeptical after reading some reviews about the reactions by some customers children. I however, have not experienced anything of that nature. I love this product. A little goes a Long way and once set for a bit, is not at all greasy. I take my 10 month old out running with me most days of the week and she has stayed as white as can be all summer. Her feet, legs, arms and face, are often exposed to the sun with never a burn or any coloration. This small bottle has lasted me all summer, with being outside just about every day; running, beach, pool, etc. I am a repeat customer of this product and recommend it to all my new mom friends!

**Update to the review below: I've increased the rating from 3 to 5 stars. I contacted Badger Balm's customer service, and they were incredibly helpful. They mailed a new tube to me with this year's updated formula, and I got the new tube literally within two days of contacting customer service. The new formula is neither lumpy nor gritty, goes on more easily, and doesn't have the weird "fresh tobacco leaf" smell that my first tube had. I've been using this product on my baby and myself. It's actually helped clear up our eczema, and I swear my skin has never been softer. He played in the pool for longer than the recommended 40 minutes, and still didn't so much as tan. One thing I will say is that the people who burned when they spent all day at the beach may not have been reapplying every 40 minutes as the manufacturer recommends. The minerals that block the sun will rub off with your towel and will start to wash away with sweat and water. That's because this is a safe product that sits on top of the skin rather than a more toxic product that would leech into your bloodstream. Logic tells you that, after toweling off or sweating or swimming, you should reapply.**

I've heard wonderful things about this product, so I was surprised to find that this product was gritty since it's designed for babies. I'm currently waiting for a response from their customer service regarding an exchange because, in fact, it shouldn't be gritty. I went to the manufacturer's web site and read the FAQs page, which said this:

If my sunscreen has some clumping, will it still work?

Yes. Temperature variations during shipping occasionally cause CLUMPING in Badger sunscreens and this does not affect the sunscreen's safety or level of protection. We tested our sunscreens with and without clumping to ensure protection. In most cases, the clumping is caused by the crystallization of Shea and Cocoa Butter. This is similar to what might happen in a chocolate bar if it is exposed to extreme temperature variations. When you apply the sunscreen to your skin you will feel them melt right in.

***Note: If the little clumps are really HARD and GRITTY, they may be the Zinc Oxide particles clumping together, and this could potentially affect the level of protection you are receiving. If this is the case, please check the expiration date to ensure that your product is still good. If your product has not expired, but exhibits the hard and gritty clumping, please contact our customer service team for a full refund or to exchange products.***

New Formulas! We have removed the Shea and Cocoa Butter from most of our new 2013 sunscreen creams to avoid further clumping.

This sunscreen is great, it's not too greasy and not hard to rub in well. I like that it is reviewed as safe by EWG.

My mom bought this for my daughter a few years ago, but I wasn't thrilled about the thickness and how difficult it was to rub in. I stuck with the cheaper, "mainstream" baby sunscreens. Since then I have become more educated and aware of the importance of using natural products. (It's not a "green" thing... It's a health thing and doing what's best for my children.) I bought this sunscreen last week and I love it. It does take a little more rubbing to get the color to fade into my daughter's face, but it's not nearly as bad as I remember. I start with less and rub it in adding more if necessary. Even after swimming for awhile, I can tell it is still on because the water just beads up on her face. The other sunscreens seem to melt off as soon as we walk out the door. This product is awesome for the obvious reasons of being chemical free but also because it works. My daughter has not been burned while using it while I went without anything and fried. (Being pregnant has changed my sensitivity to the sun!) Lastly, the smell is different from conventional sunscreens, but it smells fine to me. It smells natural I don't know how else to describe it.

I recommend this product to other moms. I know some reviews give it a low rating because of the smell or because they broke out in a rash. First, you have to decided what you care more about and make your sacrifices / compromises in the right area. I prefer health over smell or other vanity issues. My family doesn't have allergies that I'm aware of, so I can't really related to that aspect. However, I would suggest trying it and if you happen to be allergic, try something else. I don't think it's the sunscreen's fault (and shouldn't receive one star) if it's not right for your individual skin. Nothing works for everybody.

Happy Summer!!

Organic Waterproof Mattress Pad

Organic Waterproof Mattress Pad Size: BassinetMy daughter has a lot of allergies and started having severe breathing issues when we bought a traditional mattress for her new big-girl bed. It seems the polyurethane foam is a pretty common trigger for people with allergies and chemical sensitivities. That said, we ended up buying a very expensive, all natural mattress and wanted it to last a very long time. This was the perfect solution. It is completely safe, non-toxic, passes GreenGuard standards, and doesn't off-gas. You would never know there's a waterproof membrane between the two layers of organic cotton, but it is truly waterproof and has protected the new mattress from a couple of very wet accidents already.

Update, June 2012: I was interested in additional details about what the waterproof inner film was made of after I first posted this review. I emailed Naturepedic, and they replied to my inquiry with a very kind, but disappointing email that it was proprietary information and that they couldn't give a lot more info, other than emphasizing many of the things that were NOT in it. I was not entirely happy with the response, but overall, I was still happy with the safety and efficacy of the mattress pad. However, shortly after our email exchange, Naturepedic emailed me again to let me know they recently updated their website to reflect more detailed info. I was really impressed with this kind of follow-up and awesome response to a concerned customer. Kudos to them for recognizing how important this information is and for quickly following up not just with me but for officially changing the info on their public site. Here's the more detailed language from their website that describes the DrySleep liner:

Drysleep uses a specially formulated polyurethane waterproof barrier that is proven to not leach harmful chemicals. It is made from the same grade material as is required for food contact applications. It also meets the highest standards for medical device biocompatibility (USP Class VI). It does not contain any fire retardants or antimicrobial treatments and is free of vinyl/PVC, phthalates and latex. It also easily passes the GREENGUARD Children & Schools and Select certification standards for chemical emissions and is approved under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

All in all, we're extremely happy with this purchase and it works exactly as it states. The fact that it comes from NaturePedic, one of the only mattress makers to get Healthy Child Healthy World's endorsement, helps us all sleep that much better at night!

SheeshI know I sound like an advertisement there, but after seeing my child suffer because of a mattress I told her she'd be safe on, my heart is so grateful that there are companies that make products that are truly safe and healthy for children and the rest of us.

since my daughter spends so many hours in her bed, i wanted a mattress cover that i was confident wouldn't have any off-gassing of chemicals that she would be breathing through the night. this is not a cheap product, but was worth it for the peace of mind. we've only been using it a couple months, but it is high quality and seems very durable. also, it's soft and doesn't make any crinkly noises like some of the vinyl pads.

Buy Organic Waterproof Mattress Pad Now

I searched a long time for a waterproof matress pad that was safe, didn't emit any toxins and didn't make rustling noises. Let me tell you, this is it. It's great, it provides great protection for our new matress, it's soft and safe. I was a little worried that that it doesn't go down the sides of the matress and only secures with the elastic straps, but it fits great and stays in place. I loved the first one so much I purchased a 2nd. It is expensive and it takes a few runs in the dryer to dry fully, but it seems to be of great quality and I expect it will last a long time.

This waterproof pad is the "berries"! I would like to own a second one; however,it was a bit costly, so I will manage with just one. I am a frugal person and this item was worth every penny. We take it with us on all of our vacations "just in case".

Exactly what I was looking for for my kids. Nice cotton top and bootom layer. No crinkily plastic noise or feel. Does not cause you to become hot or sweaty like most waterproof covers. It does cost more but it is worth it! Amazon has the most reliable shopping. Anything I am looking to buy I check here first.

I think I must've tried at least two other different kinds of pads and finally settled on these. They fit perfectly the little indentation for the nipple is sublime and kind of cool and the little adhesive sticker, though not necessary, is a great little addition. They aren't super bulking and they aren't "all encapsulating" for my average breasts. They're great. I'm planning to get a box for my sister when she starts to breast feed.

Replace Medela Personalfit Connector and Breastshield. Suitable for Pump-in-style Released After July 2006.I bought this pump kit from eBay, and I loved this product. It is packaged in manufacturer's official box, and all pieces inside are carefully packed with plastic cases or bags. These replacement parts work excellently with my pump in style pump. The breastshields are one-piece and non-separable, but work better than separate ones. I still have Medela's shields, and I use these and Medela's interchangably. I do not feel any difference. The kit includes 2 valves and 4 membranes. I tried them on my Medela breastshields, and they fit perfectly! I noticed that they also have another product that contains even more valves and membranes. I highly recommend this product. If buying from Medela, it's going to cost me $35-$40. But with this one, you get 2 tubes, 2 shields, 2 valves, and 4 membranes. It's nice to have them together in one package as I don't have to look around and buy many separate pieces. The breastshields look the same as Medela's. I still have Medela's shields, and I use these and Medela's interchangably. You can not tell the difference unless you look very closely. They have their logo on it. I also like the tubing. It's clean and works well. It costs about $9-$10 to get tubing separately. The package also contains 2 extra membranes. It's great to have extras on hand as they rips easily. Save yourself some bucks and get this one rather than Medela's.
